A THOUSAND MILES BETWEEN TWO HEARTS!

9 of August this year I celebrated 4 years together with the “prince of my personal love story”, but why is it an important? because it all stared as a "long distance relationship", and now here we are 4 years later and stronger than ever.

My story: We meet in USA where we dated for only 2 weeks before I leave. I didn’t know if I was going to see him again. Why? Because he is from Ukraine and I am from Ecuador and we didn’t know if it was going to work. Once I reached home we started talking and we decided we were going to give it a try. We talk during a whole year (thank you technology!). Finally we meet again and spend all the summer together in USA. At the end of summer he came to my country to meet my family and 6 months later me and my sister crossed 11,570 km to get to Ukraine and meet his parents. It was one of the most coolest things I have done! Six months later we both came to Canada to be together. We have been here for more than a year and we hope to stay! Out of this I learn that love, patience, perseverance, honesty and hope are the most important things to maintain a “long distance relationship". Tips that worked for us:
- Be detail oriented, provide small presents to show you partner how important he/she is. No need to buy things, small poems, songs, pictures are worth more than an expensive gift.
- Give each other space. even though you want to talk all the time, having personal time is always healthy.
- Do not lie or cheat (I guess this one works for a normal relationship but being far makes it harder)
- Be patient, if he/she do not answer right the way, there is a reason why, so give it time.
- Do not isolated yourself from the world. Sometimes is hard to balance the time spend talking with your partner and doing other things such school assignments, hanging out with friends and family. If you do not learn how to balance you may lose your friends, drop grades, not talk to your family and after you may blame your partner and fight.
- Plan a future with your couple. This kind of relationship are hard to maintain if you don’t have a plan. A plan with dates and goals give you more HOPE.
Finally stay strong and good luck!
